Publication Workshop
Complete Your Research Knowledge and Wisdom with our Last Hands-on NRA Module
We would like to begin with warm congratulations to all the participants who had their certificates conferred in our earlier Preview and Novel Research Approach (NRA) workshops. Well done on your achievement and welcome to the GradEx’s alumni community. You may be aware that GradEx Academy runs a series of workshops throughout the year tailored specifically for you.
As an extension from the previous NRA workshop, we are excited to host another workshop for you – Actual Data Analysis & Publication Workshop. As a friendly reminder, all teams were required to collect around 200 responses using an online survey platform within a one-month period. We hope that your team has the data at hand. Get ready to analyze your data, discover your results, and publish your work.
“This is the final step to equip yourself with comprehensive knowledge of the research process. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn some extraordinary procedures that will be useful for your own journey in PhD or academia.”
We Work with You as a Team so that You Propel Forward and Reach the Finish Line
The data analysis and publication stage has been known to hold some of the most challenging tasks that all PhD candidates have to deal with. This 1-day workshop is designed as a response to mitigate the major obstacles by providing practical knowledge and skills of how to effectively run data and prepare a quality paper for publication.
The first part of the workshop focuses on analyzing the data that your team has gathered using IBM SPSS Statistics; the BEST method to analyze “interaction” effects. This includes transferring data from the online survey, data preparation and screening, creating the syntax, data analysis and interpretation, and display results. By the end of this hands-on session, you will be able to accurately and independently analyze data with confidence. Specifically, you will know how to:
· enter questionnaire data in SPSS and carry out data cleaning
· create the syntax for regression analysis: the hidden application in SPSS
· employ the right statistical analysis to answer the research questions
· run descriptive analyses and use reliability analysis to find problem items
· perform correlation matrix to ensure absence of multicollinearity
· test direct and multiple moderation effects based on the given model
· interpret results to support or reject the research hypotheses
· tabulate and report the results according to WOS/ISI journal format
In the second part of the workshop, participants will learn how to strategize and publish the research they initiated in the NRA workshop, either in a peer-reviewed journal or a research book. Dissemination of research findings is the ultimate goal of research. Accordingly, you will be taught how to effectively write and structure your manuscript for publication. The nuts and bolts of getting papers published will be given particular emphasis. Successful completion of this workshop will allow participants to:
· understand what editors look for in a paper
· write effectively with good writing habits and editing skills
· construct an interesting title and abstract
· write a good paper from introduction to conclusion
· identify and select suitable journals for publication
· develop the skills on how to respond to reviewer’s comments
· win the reviewer and editor’s hearts
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, we presently offer virtual workshops to ensure that we can continue to serve you with quality training. Join our next virtual Publication Workshop and be inspired by interactive discussions led by our appointed trainer who is particularly well-versed in multiple moderation analysis and journal publication. We encourage all participants from our previous NRA workshop community to attend and gain valuable insights from this 1-day workshop.
“Together we will discuss underlying issues and strategies involved to analyze your data and publish your research.”
CRAFTING CONCEPTUAL PAPERS WORKSHOP
Publishing journal papers during doctoral studies is considered a ‘must’ in today’s competitive job market. Relative to empirical papers, the research community has given little attention to guide PhD students and fellow academics on how to develop well-crafted conceptual papers. Here are some basic questions concerning conceptual papers:
- What is a conceptual paper?
- Why are conceptual papers necessary in academia?
- How would publishing conceptual papers benefit PhD students?
- What are the differences between conceptual and empirical papers?
- How should a conceptual paper be structured?
- What are the key points to remember when drafting a conceptual paper?
- How to choose which journal is suitable for your conceptual paper?
The goals of this workshop are threefold:
(1) to increase participants’ knowledge about conceptual papers
(2) to examine the key components of conceptual paper write-ups using a combination of synthesized reviews and theoretical model development with propositions, and
(3) to give participants hands-on experience of how to write and prepare a conceptual paper for journal publication. Specifically, this workshop is designed to train participants to plan, structure, organize, and produce write-ups for a conceptual piece derived from their own thesis or research proposal.
What journal reviewers expect from a conceptual paper is also not widely known. For this reason, we will discuss how authors can overcome the challenges of writing and publishing conceptual papers. We will share specific examples from actual comments by reputable journal editors and reviewers with participants to show their queries and how best to respond to their concerns. The 1-day workshop combines a series of brief lectures and interactive exercises, led by our experienced trainer.
“Publishing conceptual papers has its own set of challenges. On the whole, academics perceive publishing conceptual papers as more difficult than empirical or methods-driven papers. This is partly the case because they have relatively little exposure to writing conceptual papers.”
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- quickly transforms their thesis into a conceptual paper
- distinguish specific parts of their thesis for conceptual write-ups
- minimize overlapping with their empirical paper
- effectively write and structure a manuscript for publication
- understand what editors look for in a conceptual paper
- identify and select a suitable journal for publication
- develop the skills to respond to reviewer’s comments
Everyone interested in this workshop is invited to attend, especially PhD students who have a research proposal at hand. The workshop is also relevant for academics who want to strategically publish conceptual papers to complement their KPIs.
We will Explore Ways in which you can Produce a Conceptual Paper from your Thesis (or Research Proposal) and Develop a Strategy to Publish It
